If you have read my previous post I shared the video of the small landing strip in Placencia, which was just suitable for the Cessna Caravan but could not have accommodated any larger aircraft.
Once we left the boat we needed some serious time on land and decided to create our own “punch crawl”. Similar to Canadian “pub crawl” but we samples a rum punch from a serious of bars along Placencia beach.
While tied up on one of the mooring balls in Pelican Cayes, we were fortunate enough to see dolphins and they even decided to swim with us.
About halfway through this trip we realized we were getting low on beer and other supplies so we crossed the channel to visit Dangriga, also known as Stann Creek. The creek being a major landmark and where we entered into the town.
Although the weather was not completely co-operative we were able to visit the remote Glover’s Atoll for a day and dove 2 notable sites. It is just over 30 nautical miles from Placencia, half of which is beyond the reef.
Virtually our first stop on this trip was at Hatchet Caye. It took us most of the day to sail here and we took the long route via Victoria Channel to avoid the shallower water directly between Hatchet Caye and Placencia.
We decided to start the new year off with a bang and head out at around 2am on January 1, 2015 for Placencia. We flew through the United Stated and arrived to a very empty Belize International Airport.
Placencia used to be a fishing village but now caters to tourists with attractions such as bars and entertainment like kayaking, snorkeling, diving, saltwater fly fishing, whale shark watching during the full moons between April and July of each year as well as numerous restaurants and local art gallery.
Placencia is a short commuter flight from Belize City International Airport and once we arrive a quick taxi will take us to the Mooring and to our new home for the next 10 days. Essentials are available here and we plan to eat and drink at one of the many local restaurants although we will have an early start in the AM as we embark on our journey.
This is a not so rare event where one or more remora’s attach themselves to a host.
