If you have read my previous post I shared the video of the small landing strip in Placencia, which was just suitable for the Cessna Caravan but could not have accommodated any larger aircraft.
If you look carefully in the video actually on the left hand side you can see a gate that will close due to the low passing aircraft.
BUT, on the trip home I noticed a much larger airstrip under construction as well as accompanying structures in progress. Today while researching another topic in Placencia I learned that this is in fact the new international airport under construction.
So beware of property in the north area of the Placencia Peninsula and closer to Hopkins, although the new airport is about halfway between the 2 areas. I speculate this the is a reason the property values are lower here as in years to come there will undoubtedly be an increase in air traffic. Although there are various speculations as well on the timeline of it’s completion. My estimation would be that that the airport is purposely situated away from Placencia so that it will not be disrupted by air traffic and will retain some of its rustic charm.
This is the gate and baggage claim of the current Placencia air strip.
This is Google earth view of the northern Placencia peninsula with the new airstrip in progress. I did observe it from our plane and it looked closer to completion than this. There was tarmac with runway numbers painted and excavation and building progress on the north and south sides of the runway.
